Mercury 115 shift problem

I replaced the shift cable on my 1980 Merc 115, had control box linkage wrong, launched and started, it went to full throttle. I corrected control box. Now it shifts fine (cable and linkage movement) but prop will not turn. I pulled the plugs and can turn prop in gear (prop shaft turns) but does not turn motor, feels like somethig has disconnected between lower unit and engine. There is a wire or hose that enters engine at this point, and an assemly called Dyna Float suspention. I remember when a stick would get caught behind the lower unit it would go out of gear until stick was removed, it feels like this is what is happening. Any suggestions, thanks a bunch!!!

Re: Mercury 115 shift problem

Get someone to shift the engine while you look down by the Dyna area...you will be looking to see if the shifter is turning like it should.

You might be better off to lower the gearcase and look up to see if this is happening.

IF once you have done this...get back to us. We will give you steps to take from here.

TMD

Re: Mercury 115 shift problem

Guessing where this is headed, I pulled lower unit, when I drained it I found some small metal in oil. I have the lower unit off and the shift rod rotates as it should (I think) I can turn the drive shaft and at no point does it turn the prop. shaft. Have not pulled unit apart yet but whats your best guess on what it is I broke between the drive saft and prop. shaft that will relieve me of my hard earned $. Thanks for your help, and any tips on rebuilding lower units would be apreciated.

Re: Mercury 115 shift problem

No one wrote back, but I did discover the problem. Drive shaft on the lower unit broke at the drive gear in the lower unit, looking for a shaft now, 31" 1980 115 Merc. Later

Re: Mercury 115 shift problem

Thanks, you most know how hard they are to get and if you find one how much they cost. Saw some lower units on e-bay, looking for a 31" shaft. Moral of this story is..... If you go full throttle, don't shift into gear, why I thought that would help I will never know. Live and Learn.
Have a good day, Foster
