I am new to boating and keep hearing about increasing the RPMs while in neutral. I do not understand this. It appears that the throttle when moved forward engages the prop and puts it in gear. What am I missing?

Also, I am getting ready to crank up the motor for testing for the 1st time in a week or so and wanted to know if single or dual muffs are the way to go. I know that a barrell is the best but not an option where it is being stored. It is a 1984 Mercury 115hp Inline 6.

Re: Mercury 115 Idle

Fester, Single hose muffs are fine.

Most controls have a cold start or throttle only setting that allows the engine to be run faster in neutral to facilitate warm up. On the MerControls, the cold start lever is a short lever just above the key. Just flip it up for cold starting or making the engine run faster. On other controls there is a button in the center of the throttlr lever. Push it in and push the throttle forward, and it will stay in nuetral.
