I posted a topic about a Mercury 115 that might be siezed up...it is. I found a rebuilt 1985 (same model as mine) with 0 hrs. that was built by a shop that builds racing motors. They want $3000 for it. It would bolt right on to my boat without changing the controls. Just bolt on and go. Is this a good deal or are there other ways to get it done cheaper? I have been a car mechanic for 6 years and somehow I found myself in the Marine Corps(not a whole lot of money). Everybody's two cents would help!!! Thank you!

to me it might be a little steep, but whats the warranty on it. do they build racing outboards or cars. you would come close to a new one for that money.

A new current year motor would be 10K or more. $3000 for a complete rebuilt '85 motor is not unrealistic assuming they offer some form of warranty with it. You might want to consider the third option, of purchasing just a rebuilt powerhead. If you're handy with tools, you could replace it yourself and spend around $1500. There are a few iboats members who offer rebuilt powerheads, most notably one member from South Carolina who specifically focusses on the inline mercs. Have a peek on eBay, you'll find him.

Last option worth considering is to look at what iboats has to offer. A pre-owned 2005 115 Optimax lists for around $6k.

Good luck.

Get a copy of boat trader online. I purchased a 115 1996 Merc with boat and trailer for $2500. Some people just want it out of theiryard and want cash in hand. Just look around. $3000 is just too much especially for an 85

To put it in perspective, I purchased my '84 115 on eBay for 890 bucks.... not rebuilt, and no guarantee. It runs good from what I can tell so far. Time will be the determining factor.
