- I have a brand new 2002 Mecury 115 EFI, 4 Stroke. The oil level was high from the start. Suspecting overfill the dealer changed the oil and 5 liters exact was added, plus new filter. Engine was immediately run, oil level was at full on the dipstick.

Now though after the engine sits for
anytime, the oil level creeps up to almost 1 inch above full. If I run it and check it immediately, the level is down around the full mark.
The is no milky color, I can't smell fuel and the check is performed at full down tilt. Any up tilt and the level goes even higher on the stick. Anybody experienced this problem? Advice?

Re: Mercury 115, 4 stroke Oil Level Problem

Hi,
Wild guess:

Analogy with a car engine and oil filter: Total amount of oil is INCLUDING oilfilter volume.

Maybe same thing with an outboard oil level, amount is including volume the filter can hold?
Could explain why there is normal oil level immediately efter it has been running (oil still in filter). And after it has been turned off for a while the oil somehow is not staying in the filter and so you get higher oil level on the oil level stick.

Maybe a new filter should be filled with oil before it is mounted to avoid any "airpockets" in the filter?

This is only speculation. Maybe could make sense?
But the dealer must know how oil and filter is changed, I guess.

Good luck!
/Bo

Re: Mercury 115, 4 stroke Oil Level Problem

Dealer should have checked the level BEFORE running the motor. It sounds like too much oil put in at the change. As soon as you run the motor, oil from the sump gets pumped throughout the engine and takes a while to drain back. Oil level should always be checked before running. I would suggest removing excess oil, as you may get foaming (which is bad) from excessive oil quantity.

Hey that is ok your motor has a dry sump oil system ( oil pan and engine block sperate) when the motor sits the oil drains from the oil system and back in to the oil pan you are good to go!!!!
