Mercury 115 2016 starter motor pictures

Anyone ever had one opened up ? Two of the brushes have what looks like insulating end caps on them. Two don’t. That normal ?
Also open to opinions or any thoughts around it being no good or not. The main cable to it doesn’t look too clever at all. Some pictures are before cleaning. Some after. Some heat has went through this, I think. . Thanks guys.

What was the problem with it? Brushes look almost new. I've seen them worn down till nothing was left of them. A rebuilt kit usually just consists of new brushes and new bushings. If the bushings wear out, the shaft can get off center and it won't perform well. Get sandpaper and clean up those ring terminals until they are a pretty copper color and you should be good. I see no problems there.

Appreciate that. Some of the pics are after a quick clean. You know…I did wonder about the off centre thing. Wondering if those end caps on 2 but not the other two, have things a little off centre ?
