Mercury 110 9.8hp general questions

Hi all,

I recently purchased a used merc 110 9.8hp that seems to run decent. I've done a bit of research on trying to find the year of the motor but have had no luck. I'm in Canada so I'm assume is was one the weird Canadian made motors with hard to cross reference models numbers. The serial number is 7103489, hopefully someone can give me an idea of what year or range of years this motor could be.
Could someone confirm that the fuel mixture for that period of motor is 50:1?
Also, I found a small fuel leak from a very thin line on the side of the block. There are two fittings that are threaded into the block that are connected by a small (maybe 1/8" thick) black tube, which is the leaky culprit. Does anyone know what this line is called or for?

Thanks in advance,
Andrew

In addition to the previous questions above, I have noticed that when I kill the motor and the boat is just drifting it causes the prop to spin slowly and I can hear a clicking sound coming from inside the motor shroud. I then put my hand in the water and spun the prop manually and found that the when the prop turns it causes the sound in the shroud of the motor. My guess is this could be the impeller on the water pump, and if so is this normal or should I be concerned and further investigate the sound?

Thanks!

Motor is a 1977 model.----Click is not the impeller.-----Gear shift may need some adjustment.------The wee hose is a recirc line and moves oil from bottom to top of the motor.---Dealer will have a roll of it.----You must install a new impeller if you do not know how old it is or what condition it is in.--------Your motor could be ruined in short order should the impeller fail !!!

any small engine place will have the small line

yes, 50:1 for your Merc.

Thanks for the replies. I'll look into adjusting the gearshift linkage. Hopefully its fairly straight forward. As for the impeller, I was told the last time the motor was ran was at the dealers to get the water pump changed, so I think that would include a new impeller as well. I hear a lot of guys having to change their impellers, is there a more robust one that can be installed or are they just prone to error?

Thanks!

the impeller is a small piece of rubber (the cheapest piece of rubber that they can sell you) with a critical job of keeping your motor cool. if you replace it when you should, you only need to spend $12 on the impeller. if you run it until it fails, it melts the water pump assembly and you spend $60 for the whole water pump (or more if you overheat the motor)

they last 2 years in salt water, and up to 5 years in fresh water. beyond that, its borrowed time as the rubber starts to break down.

Thanks for the advice Scott. I'll pick one up when I head to the dealers for the recirculation tube, just to be on the safe side. As for the gearshift adjustment, would this be adjustments under the hood or more along the lines of the adjustments in the gear case? Any and all input is must appreciated!

I was considering taking the boat out for the weekend, is this clicking (gear shift adjustment) issue severe enough that I should not run the motor until it's fixed?

Thanks in advance.

Put the motor up on the stand tonight and found out that it only makes the 'clicking' noise when spinning the prop with the motor is in forwards, not in neutral or reverse. When I try to spin the prop in reverse it wont spin as it is in gear, which makes it seem odd that it does spin in forwards. The shifter linkage seems good, everything is tight. Not sure where else I could adjust... Perhaps its normal for it to make this sound while free spinning in forwards..? hah

It will click / ratchet in forward when you spin the prop clockwise.---Normal.
