I am doing a rebuild because of low compression. I am adding new upper and lower bearing and seals along with piston rings. I wanted to know after adding new rings to the pistons is it a need to hone the cylinder?

YES you should always hone the cylinder when replacing the rings/pistons. Do not use a ball hone on a 2 strk use a hone with straight stones.

Reason is the balls can get into the inlet and exhaust ports in the cylinders and mess them up. The ball hone is the better device but you have to use it on 4 strokers with cylinders with no porting.

On honing, a criss cross pattern of about 30 degrees. Just knock the glaze off where you can see the hone marks. The less the better but you need enough to have some roughage to grind off the surface of the rings so that they can seat properly.

I use an electric drill and use a slow up and down motion.

Hone. But only enough to remove any shine from the cylinder surface. Use honing oil too.

Thank You Texasmark, I just learned the correct way to honing a two stroke. Nobody ever explained the ball hone verses the straight stone hone.
