I am trying to get at the impeller but I do not understand how to get the bottom end of the leg off. I do not have time to get a sevice manual, or the funds to get a professional to do it for me. Can you help?
Is there anything holding it on apart from the 2 obvious bolts? The aft end is openong up but the impeller/shaft end won't budge.
Thanks very much for any help.
Paul

You need to disconnect the shift rod. I am not familiar with your motor, but most motors disconnect it at the top, under the cover.

Good Luck.
JB

Pinney, i have changed literally hundreds of these impellers over the last 20 years.........after the 2 nuts are loose the case should drop down...if it doesnt either the front stud is corroded into its bore or the driveshaft splines are rusted to the crankshaft..hope for the former..the latter is an ugly thing...most go too far an break very spensive pieces

Thanks ODDD1,
I'm adraid it looks like the scary scenario.
Could you tell me at what height the join is? Is there any chance of getting some penetrating oil in, or perhaps a bit of physical abuse? Thanks again.
Paul

Re: Mercury 110 9.8 help!

The spline connection is at the powerhead base..quite high up......now i would not suggest this because of the inherent danger, but i have heard of loosening frozen splines by applying some downward pressure to the case [like a wedge between the case and the leg] and running the engine in a drum of water..theory is the pessure and 'misalignment' of the splines will make them work loose

Re: Mercury 110 9.8 help!

Thanks again ODDD1,
I've sorted it. Turns out the splines were fine! Just general gumminess. You'll hate this but a steel chisel between the front end bolt and the upper casing and a small fast hammer started it off and then it worked loose. Without the confidence of knowing there was nothing else holding it I would not have dared. Anyway, with your help, it's now ready for renaissance.
Thanks again. Hope I or someone else can return the favour. What goes around comes around! Thanks, Paul
