Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,.... Never heard of a trim alarm....

Overheat alarm, low oil pressure alarm, or low drive oil alarm, Yes...

Never heard of a trim alarm....

It is part of the Smart Craft system.

GAJ, I would help if you posted some engine and drive information, like what are they and what are their serial numbers.

Don,
Ok, here is the issue with my boat.
Boat type is a Sea Ray 220 Sun Deck 2006 model with 5.0L, ALPHA 3 out drive serial number OW492763 stamped on the bracket mating to the transom.

The issue.
- I bought the boat used with the trim not working. Since the last week I am trying to get myself we educated with the boat system and understand that I have a smart craft system also with an anolgue gauge arrangement.
- The trim sensors were looking pretty average to say so I have removed both from the leg either side of teh drive. Port side was not connected at all, just had the wires dangerling.
- Starboard side was connected properly but since I have cut the wires to remove the old sensor. Prior to cutting the wires I made sure that it would be ok to rejoin the wires using solder and resin filled heat shrink.
- So, looking at the drive from the back I currently have 2 wires port side & 2 wires starboard side.
- I have also traced the wires looking in the engine bay from where they come through the transom and join there retrospect wires inside to the trim pump and engine etc.
The bit that is confusing me.
- When i search sites to purchase the new trim sensors for the OW492763 drive I have seen conflicting things. I see new sensors which have a 3 plug end wire for each sensor and then I see trim sensors assemblies with just 2 wires for each sensor that plug into the mating parts within the engine bay. From my perspective i cannot see how the 3 plug sensor end wire would work as this does not corrolate with the engine bay mating wiring.
- I have since reviewed the wiring schematic in this area and see 5 schematic lines reresenting things coming through the transon to the drive. Have worked out that 4 schematic lines are related to the trim which makes sense on my boat reprsenting the 4 wires that i see at the back of the boat and the other one being the tube for speedo.
So where do I GO FROM from here:
- I believe that looking at the electrical schematic
- Do i buy the 3 plug ended sensors which i believe is for smartcraft or do I buy the 2 wired sensor which seems the correct choice for my boat? If I buy the 2 wired sensor plug ended one will my smartcraft work and the alarm go away? I guess I will have to reset the smartcraft system as well.

any help would be fantastic.

Re: Mercrusier Trim alarm on smart craft

Since you've disabled the trim gauges you now need to disable the trim alarm/gauge setup in the SmartCraft gauge. I think it's in the Propulsion setings. I'm sitting in my office at work right now or I'd turn mine on and tell you exactly where it is. You can get the manual for it online at www.mercurymarine.com. It's one of the few that they give free since it doesn't ship with the gauge.

Don't you wish I'd posted this before you cut all those wires...

Steve,
The wires port side were allready disabled i.e cut, the starboard side trim sensor on the leg disintergrated in my hands. My end goal is to achieve new sensors on the leg and have the system working as it should. I am just not sure which trim sensors to buy. Looking at the above serial numbers I guess I will need to match the engine serial with the outdrive serial numbers to make sense of it all. My thoughts are that if I dont reinstall smart craft sensors that match the system the alarm may not go away.

Thanks Fun Times for the info, unfortunately, I have little experience with the Smart Craft systems.

Grant, I would suggest you copy and keep handy the info FT posted (copied below) about your engine. You WILL need it.

Re: Mercrusier Trim alarm on smart craft

Hey Don,
Thanks very much for your support and time.
I am going to look into it further and see if I can get the analogue system going using the non-smart craft sensors. This is the most cost effective way.

Thanks for all the serial numbers etc this is more than I had. I will take them to the local shop.

Re: Mercrusier Trim alarm on smart craft

Just curious, did your SmartCraft gauge ever show trim correctly or did you just notice that the gauge had the capability and now want to make it work?

Re: Mercrusier Trim alarm on smart craft

Steve, thanks for your reply.
When I bought the boat the analogue trim gauge did not work. When I turn on the ignition a single beap happens and the smartcraft displays says trim alarm. Started to look into it at found that port side sensor wires going out of the transom into the sensor was cut. I removed the sensor. CHecked out the starboard side sensor at it disintergrated in my hand so I removed the screws and took the sensor off the leg. So looking at the rear of the boat fwd I have 2 wires left and 2 wires right. I since looked inside the engine bay and noticed that the 2 wires that come from the transom to the trim pump were cut so I have since rejoined them. The other 2 wires seem to be going to the engine which seems to be correct to the electrical schematic of the web for the 220 sundeck 2006 model. My delma is that is that when I see the sensors that i removed off the leg they seem a little different to what the shop is saying I need. The new sensors corresponding to the serial number on the leg seem to have a 3 wire plug end on each which would mean a total of 6 wires to join into the engine bay where this does make sense as i previously mentioned i only have 4 wires. My thought is could it be that I have smart craft but this capability may not be utilized and that i use a different sensor that managers just the anologue gauge?

cheers

Since you have both smartcraft and analogue gauges working in your boat at this time, It sounds like to me at this point you have a choice to run whatever gauge you want right now, either the smartcraft or the analogue gauge, But you can not use both at the same time.

The wires you pulled out sound like they go to the analogue gauge since you have 2 & 2 on each side.

I will say the analogue system will probably be easier for you to set up overall.

If you do go to the analogue gauge then there should be a setting on the smartcraft so that you can turn off the trim functions, You may need a smartcraft manual to help figure it out though. If you do need a manual than you might be able to find one over in the general discussion area on Club Sea Ray forums. Them guys over there are up on their smartcraft stuff.

Also I don't see anything in any or your serial numbers that say you need to use the smartcraft trim sensor, It's more of an option depending on what the boat manufacturer or dealer set up for your boat when new.

Have a look at your trim sensor options, See number 6 & 25, You are describing item number 6 and that is the standard trim sensor for the analogue gauge.

The section where I highlighted above, Did you mean "Does" Or "Does not" make sense? Not to sure what you meant by that.

Re: Mercrusier Trim alarm on smart craft

@GAJ - So since you've owned the boat your trim indicators haven't been working. This makes more sense now. What I would do at this point, if I really wanted a trim gauge, I'd go with a standard dash trim gauge and then disable the one in the SmartCraft gauge. That should allow you to use just a simple two wire trim sender.

I'm very familiar with how the trim gauge works and SmartCraft but I don't know if your trim senders are meant to provide info for other services. Things like maybe a rev limiter so the engine can't be over reved in gear if the unit is up or something else. You should check to see if any of that might be true.

Perhaps someone on iBoats will chime in or maybe you can call the manufacturer and get more info.

Re: Mercrusier Trim alarm on smart craft

Hi Steve,
Thanks for staying with me on this one.
I agree with you. I keep referring back to the electrical schematic that Sea Ray have online and this layout is the same as my boat 5 schematic lines showing on the drawing going through the transom. 4 wires (would assume they are the sensor wires) and 1 line (would be the speed tube). I am going to use my mates sensors of his 20 footer and hook them up to see if they will work and take the boat for a run. I will also try and block the alarm through smart craft. Maybe make it dumb.
The other thing that i didn't mention in this forum is that when i sit at 3000rpm through choppy water an alarm comes on the dash saying 'reduce engine speed' and the engine reduces in power some what. I have a feeling that one of the trim sensor wires feeds into the engine wiring harness which is currently not hooked up to the sensor. This also might be why I this problem exists as well, as the smart craft at a guess is telling the system that it cannot detect trim, therefore sending a message to the slow the speed down...thoughts on this would be good. Am i correct or not??

cheers
