Hello everyone, I am still trying to rebuild a Mercrusier 470 I do not have a lot of time to work on the motor but I haven't given up yet.
I have installed the timing chain and front cover on the block . I pressed in new oil seals on the camshaft and crankshaft and am ready to install oil pump and oil pan.
My question is that the oil seal on the crankshaft doesn't touch the shaft as if its too big. Is there a second seal that I need to get to seal this area. The old seal is the same size, and West Marine says that the seal is the right one according to their book.
Pleas let me know if anyone knows the answer or I'm overthinking this thanks.
Also I tried to download a picture of the motor but having trouble getting pictures into this site .Any Ideas?

Hi there.
You might PM a moderator to move this to the mercruiser section.

First see if you can get this moved to the proper section.

Secondly the seal doesn't seal on the crankshaft, it seal on the harmonic balancer.

Don't forget to put a dab of automotive black sealant on the keyway at the damper. If you don't it will leak oil.

Just so you're aware, The serial number has your engine to be a 1987 165 HP Version of the 3.7L/170 HP/180 HP-3.7 L/LX/190 HP family according to the parts diagrams that pop up. Model number 01651347.
