mercrusier alpha one shifting

Hello again If I did not get the flat washer there back on top of the shifting rod would that be why it will not shift it acts like it wants to go in gear but just makes a clicking noise I found this flat washer after I put it back together the first time but just noticed in the diagram I have that it is setting on top of the shifting rod I have the little one on there just did not see this one fall off could that be my shifting problem and the cause of the ticking noise.

You do need to have that washer there, it prevents the shift shoe from dropping down

Even with the mercruiser book, I had mine apart and back together so many times, that I started timing myself! Anyway, I finally got forward and reverse and everything is well...
