I am new at boating and I have a question. I have a 1988 Mercrusier 3.0 Alpha 1 and when I go to start it just goes to the relay switch and clicks so I went to buy me another battery and still done that same thing its not getting enough power or something. I turn the lights on to see if them go deem but still bright it doesnt bogg it down when I try to start it. So could you point me in the right direction to pin point the prob.? Thanks Very Much

When you say relay switch do you mean starter solonoid? sounds like that may be the problem, try a tap with a block of wood if then ok change the starter or get it re-coned.

I hate to tell you this, but you do have a starter solenoid on your starter, or you don't have a 3.0L. The starter solenoid is part of the starter, and is what the main (Positive) battery cable is attaced to.
The slave solenoid is on the plate with the main wiring harness plug and circuit breaker on the starboard side of the engine.

I presume that you have an expensive boat, but no manual.
Think you need one?

That is what it says on the motor 3.0 and on the starter there is no solenoid but the hot wire is on the starter in the main front and there are 2 other wires there too but on the sides of the hot wire so I really dont know but it ran the other day and it just died, now I cant get it back. Thanks Very Much

Start there, and trace wiring to the ignition switch.

Never worked on an engine before have you? The distributor cap (that thing with the spark plug wires) has nothing to do with your problem

Did you even read about testing the starting system in the link given by Wotknot? Obviously not, so here is the link again. Click on it and read it. Then go do the tests like it says.
This is the link, click here
