I have MerCruser MCM-170 Serial #0A475016 with a trim pump SAE-J1171 Marine. I have had problems with trim drifting down will running in the water and on the trailer when it was up. I am not loose any oil. It has been doing this for several years. I figured that there was an o-ring or seal leaking in the pump because I was not loosing any oil. I recently took the outdrive off to have the bearings replace. While the outdrive was off one piston went all the way in and the other one most of the way out. I have tried putting pressure on the one that is out to get them back in sync and it would not moved. When I push the trim button all I here at the pump is a clicking sound like a solenoid trying to kick in. Nothing happens. Is there a service manual for the trim to take it a part and replace the o-ring/seal that is leaking and to get the pistons aligned again?

The SAE-J1171 is a marine standard. You should find it on your alternator and starter also. What kind of trim pump do you have.

I look at the trim motor and I could not find any ID tag. I have attached 2 photos of it. On the second there is a parcel number 3A11. This trim unit is the original one that came with the boat with the MerCruser 1986. I have attached 2 photo. I am new to the site and not sure if I did it right. KIMG0108.jpgKIMG0109.jpg

You should find 2 large wires coming from the motor one blue(up) and green (down) jumping from the red power cable to blue or green should operate the pump motor. if it does then its a solenoid issue
Mercruiser Power Tilt and Trim Pump Assembly and Brackets
or just replace it with a newer type

Thank you. I will try doing the doing the jumper first to see what the problem is. Replacing the unit is what I thought I may have to do with it any way with the age of it.
