Mercruiser years

Could someone tell me what year they changed from the "MR" drive to the Alpha 1 ? I have a 1974 "MR" 888 drive with a bad gimbal housing and I wondering if a gimbal from a 1979 will be compatible with my drive unit. Thanks..

The 888 did not use the MR, it used a MC-1 drive, a prediisor of the R, MR, and Alpha I.
