Mercruiser wont go forward

I have a 92 Rinker 5.0 with a Alpha 1 outdrive. we just got home from the lake after 4 days and the last day the boat would not go in forward gear. It worked fine the days before, exept I did hear a grind kind of noise when I put it in forward gear. We parked it in a slip and the next morning no forward gear. Also a couple times while pulling my kids on a tube when we put it in gear to start off we heard a gear slipping or grinding noise. Anyone have an idea where I can start looking for the problem. First thing to do is drain the gear lube and check it.<br />Is it milky (indicates water)<br />Is it filled with metal particals on the magnet on the drain plug.<br />Is the oil burned?<br />Is the oil sparkly and full of metal?<br />Could also be a spun prop or coupler.<br />Could be a bad shift cable.<br />It's just going to take some looking into to find the actual proble.
