Mercruiser without exhaust bellows?

I have a 1980 chris scorpion with no exhaust bellows, is this a alpha 1?

Flashback...Just because it has no exhaust bellows does not mean a thing. Some setups did not install the exhaust bellows. Does yours have the lifting ring like in this pic? If so its a "R" drive or you could say Pre Alpha. It should be if your year model is correct??<br /><br />

What's the difference between an "R" series and the Type 1 outdrive? Are they one in the same?<br /><br />Walt

Trent, thanks for the info. no mine does not have the lift ring, but heck the boat is over 20years old, I guess the drive could have been swapped out once or twice, It would't suprise me. The only info I have for maintaining my boat was a clymer manual which the previous owner gave me along with the boat. It must show about 50 variations of outdrives, well maybe not that many, but a lot.
