I have a 1989 Sea Ray with a mercruiser 3L 130HP 4cyl I/O. Today I put the boat in the water and started it with a little difficulty. Ran it for @ 1 hr. stopped and swam for a little while when I tried to restart it did not want to start sounded like the battery was going. Then it would not even start to crank. All that happens is there is a click that appears to come from the Mrecathode. I have removed the starter and had it tested (Auto Zone) it passed but it did not sound completely right. My concern is even with a new starter it will continue to only make a clicking sound and will not even try to engage the starter. Anyone have any ideas as to what is going on and would the clicking in the mercathode have any effect on what is happening

Re: Mercruiser will not start

Well, I had a very perplexing problem last year with my starter. I blamed the battery and charging system and even thought that something was causing the battery to drain when on the sound.

Turns out that my starter would work perfectly when it was cold, but would not turn the engine over if it was hot. Gave all the symptoms of a weak battery. All you'd hear was the clicking of the starter solenoid.

I replaced the starter and have never had another issue.

Thank you both for the information. We pulled the starter and had it tested even though it passed it was sluggish. Got a new starter and it starts okay. Will post again if things change.
