I have a 1989 SR 260CC with 7.4 mercruiser Bravo one that the engine has been out of a few times and am having trouble getting the wiring correct for the warning system (tan wire w blue stripe).

I know it handles the temp switch, oil switch, gear lube res., and possibly even the high water alarm that is hooked through the second bilge pump in the bilge, but am not fully understanding the circuit or proper way to have it hooked up, there are some wires (same color) that are not attached to anything, the high water pump does not function, and even though the buzzer will come on with the key on and engine not started etc I am not trusting the system.

Can anyone advise on how this system works (eg. does any one of the switches complete ground, or is it supposed be a live line?) and if it should or could work properly if all the terminals are not attached?

Currently the only one that I know is not connected is the faulty hi temp switch (least of my problems/concerns, but not sure if it not being hooked up could be a problem with the system), but there is another tan/blue wire from the harness that is near the starter slave solenoid or mercathode that I can not confirm its correct connection point.

I have an old pic from a previous time this engine was pulled for rebuild, but even though it was hooked up the system still did not work, and the orig installer used a rusty old sheet metal screw that did not look like it was factory etc.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Re: Mercruiser Warning Buzzer Wiring Help

NOt sure if it is the same system as on my 88 5.7 merc but the waring buzzer on mine is a grounding type system. If you ground the lead coming from the buzzer it will sound after the buzzer timer completes. The lead to it goes to all the sensors and if any one makes a ground the alarm goes off. Generally it will sound when the key is turned on after the specified time (i think mine is 5 secs or so) if the motor is not running. The alarm sounds because the oil pressure sender is grounded as the motor is not running so no oil pressure is there.

Hope this helps.
