mercruiser tilt problems

I have a 1973 jolly roger with a 888 mercruiser. I have a three button on the dash. it goes up without a problem but I can't get it to come down. The motor runs in the down position but nothing happens. If I disconnect the hoses it goes down but without nothing Please help

Check the fluid level in your trim reservoir. I had the same problem with a '78 Mercruiser 470. The pump motor operated in both directions, but would only raise the drive. Filled the reservoir, cycled it 4 or 5 times and vented it. Now it works like a charm.
