Need help. I am replacing the vinyl in my boat and need to remove the throttle control that is mounted on the driver's side of the boat so I can remove the vinyl covered side piece but I cannot get to the screws behind the logo cover. I need to remove the handle first then the logo thing will come off but I dn't see how to do that.

Re: mercruiser throttle control removal

If it is a quicksilver control with the tilt trim toggle switch and a push button to release the shift cable ,there is a socket head set screw 3/16 " I think.you will have to remove the screws that hold in the plastic trim around the switches. Make sure it is neutral .There is a shift rod from the selector knob that will fall out pay attention how it goes for reassembly. You will also have 4 wires to disconnect from the switches.they are color coded .The push button just pulls off the detent then the handle pull off handle. There is a trim plate covering 4 screws that mount the control to the side on my boat. There were 1/4 in nuts on the inside holding it to the plywood trim . It was hard to get a wrench in there to get them loose. When you reassemble it , back the set screw all the way out and put on some lock-tite or some fingernail polish on the threads then tighten it down good. The first time I didn't do this and had trouble with handle coming loose. Pay attention to how the lock rings are behind the shifter handle are . this is what the rod goes to to lock the shift selecter that you release with the button on the hand grip. Some where on this site there is a link to mercruiser parts to see how it all fits together if you forget how it goes back together. I took mine all apart in the fall and didn't reassemble until spring when my upholstry guy got me all finished, He works cheeper in the winter time when he not rushed.

Good luck

It would be nice to have a pic of the controller, but Jeff did a good job with the disassembly for most of the old Commander type control levers.

Re: mercruiser throttle control removal

I have not found any set screws. It is a Quicksilver (1983). It has the shift release on the front edge of the top of the handle. going down the handle it has trim button (bow up, bow down), then a "trailer" button, then at the bottom it has the "throttle only" button. I have taken it all apart but can't find any set screws and don't want to break it.
This is on a 1983 Chris Craft 21 ft open bow with a Mercruiser 260 engine (model MCM 260).
I have redone the inerior of 2 boats in the past and don't remember having this problem.
All help greatly appreciated.

the set screw is located on the bottom of the handle and screws in at about a 20 degree angle . you will need a allen wrench to take out. I beleive your control is the same as I described previously.
