We bought our first boat 3 weeks ago. 1983 Sea Ray. Great boat. My buddy pointed out that I've got a little slop in the steering. Upon closer inspection and some research, I see that the stern drive is not tight to the upper swivel shaft. In a Mercruiser manual, it reads "Mercruiser I-Drive Transom assemblies (s/n 5490562 and above) use a square (instead of a splined) connection between the upper swivel shaft and gimbal ring. Can someone give me a hint as to what to do about this slop, if anything? Do I need to immediately stop using the boat and fix it? What does fixing it involve? How much should I expect to pay for the repair? I'm still learning....Thank You Very Much! We've had some awesome times in our 3 weeks owning this boat and looking forward to this weekend!

Re: Mercruiser steering slop - help!

I did some research in the Mercruiser manuals and contacted Mercruiser. Between the two, I found that my gimbel ring and upper swivel shaft need to be replaced. I have the unusual square upper swivel shaft and the gimbel ring should have been tightened every year by the previous owners. I found the Mercruiser service manuals at BoatUS and viewed them in their library at no cost. I got the number for Mercruiser from Sea Ray (as I contacted them previously, too). My boat is being worked on this week. As for the pulling, it's not pulling hard on one side or another; the gimbel ring was just loose around the upper swivel shaft and that cause the play. My boat has power steering and it seems to be working fine.
