Mercruiser steering problem

Hi
I just replaced my gen 1 mercruiser steering actuator with the newer type with metric fittings, problem is when all is connected up it turns fully to the left and locks everything up.
when i release the pin on the cable it all works fine with light hand pressure, but as soon as i connect the cable again it just goes to full lock and stays there.
With the engine off steering seems fine and cable moves freely.
This on a Maxum 21 with 4,3 mercruiser.
have been weeks at this now.

Welcome aboard
Sounds like something in your setup is keeping a slight pit of pressure on the ram to one side and not in the center

Post a pic of what you have

Can't get a pic till the weekend as boat is 100 miles away from me.
Only difference I can see is the mounting points ( the two pinch bolts) is about 2 inches higher on the actuator putting it 2 inches lower in the hull and making the cable route tighter.

Looking at your steering lever 94991A1 (NLA) shows its: 8.58 long , New is: 9.50 long

Is the slot straight up/down (pic d)?
