Re: mercruiser starter replace?

It's often easier to get to the inside bolt from the other side of the engine, under the sump....

Re: mercruiser starter replace?

I just replaced mine two weeks ago.
I simply reached under from the port until felt it. It's only 3" away from the other bolt.
Of course access is an issue depending on what kind of boat you have.

Re: mercruiser starter replace?

That explains why you can't reach the second bolt.
You must have some longs arms!
BTW, there will three or four wires attached to the solenoid under there too.
Dunno if I'd pull the engine...manifold maybe.

Good thought... But I would definitely be doing SOMETHING to improve access...

Yeah, now I know where the term Hell Hole came from.
Must be a lot of dead space in that hull (?).

I have actually heard of people cutting a hole in the bottom of a boat to get access to a starter motor!!!

Yeah, let us know. It might look harder than it actually is.
If you do have to pop the manifold...it's not a big deal. 8 bolts (I think), a couple hose clamps and a gasket. If you do, it might be worth while to separate the riser to take a check the water jackets.

For the record - I assume Chris is not suggesting that course of action. Pull the engine? Maybe. Cut a hole in the bottom of the boat. Uh... no.

I think he was merely citing an extreme someone (else) has gone to.

Re: mercruiser starter replace?

Try working with two people.

If you got one bolt out you should be able to feel under the starter for the other.

Use a deepwell socket and get yourself a extra long extension (12"+) plus the typical 8" extension that comes with a socket set.

One person holds the socket in place.
Best to put the bolt you can reach back place (snug) until you get the lower bolt out.

Good luck.
