Mercruiser shift cable bellows clip

I just replaced my shift cable, just wanted to know if the bellow end that faces the outdrive, does that clip have to go over the metal part of the cable. I had it around that, but when I raised the outdrive to trailer it slid off, wasn't sure if it had to go up that far, or just around the cable itself.
Thanks

NO, you'll end up pulling the housing end off, or tearing the bellows. There is a measurment for it that should be listed in the instruction sheet you got with the kit.
For mine I set it where the bellows was almost fully compressed when the drive is trimmed down fully. I also discarded the clips, and used nylon zip ties instead, the clips are a PIA.
