I have a 1979 thompson with a inline 6 the cable is new i have ajusted it just as the book said..it shifts into forward and reverse BUT it takes alot of throttle to go into forward and less for reverse..So therefor it stalls pulling in and out of the dock..I read in the book about the cable needing to be exactly 1-3/8 from the end of the cable guide insert..does that mean i need to cut the cable?
Thank you for your time........

i agree. that's the way my new one came also..
for the lower shift cable adj. just follow the first 3 or 4 steps in the service manual i believe. that's all there is regarding putting the lower shift cable back onto the shift plate. basically, be in fwd on the drive and the helm. set the barrels at 6'' center to center. mount the barrels to the shift plate and be done..
prior to install, ya might also just for curiosity operate the shift cable by hand from inside the boat and be sure it operates nice and smooth and that it's truly giving you fwd, neu, rev...
