Has anyone had experience with adjusting the air/fuel mixture on a Rochester 4 barrel carb?

(Ours is a 1985 with a GM 305 engine)

Preliminary idle mixture is 2-3 turns CCW from full in. This adjustment must be made after the engine is fully warmed up.

Thanks Trent - does that screw affect the air/fuel mixture throughout the full throttle range? or just at idle?

Its only a idle mixture adjustment. Will effect it up to about 1500 RPM's. Should have two mixture screws for that carb. At the base of the carb.

Can the Rochester carb be leaned out by changing the metering rods in the secondaries?

hold on don't start messing around with its innards. Everyone likes to blame the carb but they usually find its a simple problem and not the carb.

fiddling with the mixture screws is all you should do unless you want to started reading up on carbs. The secondary rods only come on at full throttle, no effect before then.

If you are having carb problems at idle or just off idle the mixture screws may help. If you are convinced that the problem is part throttle, you should first disassemble the carb and rebuild, making sure that it is operating as it should, float height is critical and primary metering rods and such.

Secondaries should be left alone until after the other stuff and the most critical thing on them is when they open, (adjusting the spring on theflapper) not the size of the rods.

Thanks all - I have ordered the rebuild kit and will get it this PM. First things first I guess!

Cominicut: Our problem is at full throttle - we are not getting full RPM at WOT. Mercruiser/GM 5L should rev out to 4200 but is only going to 3200 or so.

bottom/outdrive/prop clean? you have done the normal clean/change fuel filters, checked timing, rotor cap points condenser plugs, compression? any missing or popping at wot? another thread said to manually apply choke at full throttle. if rpm picks up power valve or rochester equivalent. cheap easy check.
