mercruiser outdrive serial number?

Hi all, I recently purchased an old junker cuddy cabin with a 1977 Mercruiser outdrive on it. I need the serial number to order a part. Where abouts is it located?<br /><br />Thanks in advance,<br />atf2k

allthingsfast<br />Stand at the back of the boat, the left side of the outdrive has a decal on the side. On this decal is stamped a serial number- if the decal is still there. Another place the numbers are supposed to be is on the valve cover-right side (driver side). The decals are installed by the person that installs the engine. MerCruiser has 3 serial numbers, engine, gimbal housing (bracket between motor and outdrive), and outdrive. It is possible that all that original info has been lost. A title may have it listed-depends on the state. Use the year of the boat as last resort, it probably is correct, but not always, mfgs. put left over models in next years boat.<br />Backfire
