Mercruiser OEM shifter

I've been chasing some no start issues after I installed my new starter and batteries, I believe it's the neutral safety switch located on the back of the throttle shifter.

I have seen someone post a replacement shifter that is the one I have, it's a 1987 Bayliner Trophy with a Mercruiser 305 5.0 V8.

Does anyone know where I can find this shifter, OR, if I can replace just the neutral safety switch that seems to be integrated to the assembly.

Thanks

neutral safety is in the control. box and prevents the motor from starting in gear, motor will not crank
shift interupter is mounted on the shift plate and causes the motor to stall/ stumble to allow coming out of gear in the water with a load in the prop
If killing the motor while shifting you need a new lower cable and/or drive service

I believe it to be the neutral safety, there are two yellow and red wires that run to the back of the shifter that appear to be loose, after disconnecting and reconnecting, I got the motor to turn over, but once I put everything back together the motor would not start again.

Can I replace this switch or do I have to replace the whole shifter assembly?

Trouble is finding the switch

I may be referring to the wrong thing, but the yellow and red wires hook into the backside of the throttle shifter above the cables, I will try to get a picture to clarify more this weekend,

I believe the neutral safety switch is #26 here: http://www.mercruiserparts.com/bam/s.../32078/1989/50 This should be your shifter in an 87. Here are the guts: http://www.mercruiserparts.com/bam/s.../32078/1989/40 The micro switch sits under there and if the shift handle is in any position other than neutral it will not turn over.

Thank you sir, that looks like what I need. In the meantime, to trouble shoot that switch to make sure that's the actual issue, I can bypass that switch by using a piece of wire to connect the two yellow/red wires together, correct?

that is correct , splice them together to bypass it. If the problem continues, check the slave solenoid/relay next.

Correct.... Just be aware when you do that, the engine will start in gear (and if the throttle is open, she'll jump like a bull)...

If you have that commander handle, you can remove it by removing the set screw, then take the cover off. You should be able to see the micro switch down there. Follow the yellow wire. Check to see if the switch is loose, it may be as simple as tightening the screws that hold it. Here is a link to a manual that will cover it https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B1T...hMGQ3YzQ1/view If you go in there you might want to lube the throttle only mechanism. Good luck!
