Mercruiser mechanical fuel pumps

Howdy all.

I recently went looking for a new fuel pump for my Mercruiser 7.4L

It's the raw-water drive mounted pump.


Mercruiser wanted something like $160 + tx, Napa (Sierra) and other parts suppliers wanted somewhere around $100-125 for it.


So, I did a little research on what this pump is. I found that AIRTEX is the actual OEM for Mercury and is also sold under the name "MASTER"... the model number is (From AIRTEX) #60932 (which matches the actual number on the Mercruiser casting.



To make a long story short, Autozone carries this pump (not in stock) for only $60 and is available in 1 week. Their catalog indicates it is a MASTER #60932, MARINE FUEL PUMP, MERCRUISER 7.4L

Maybe you all know this but for us people that are trying to reduce our costs (so we can buy more gas!!!) this is a large savings!

Around here it's this is worth around 20 gallons of gasoline!

One question.
If there were a marine fuel pump and an automotive fuel pump in front of you can you tell the difference?

One way is to check the catalog and only buy the MARINE pump. They actually designate marine in their catalog. The also show a picture indicating a fitting.


Mechanical marine fuel pumps have a hose fitting on the casting that is connected to the "back" of the pump (that is, back of the diaphragm) There's a small clear plastic hose connected to this fitting that goes to the carburetor. You should be able to see evidence of fuel in that hose if the diaphragm is leaking.


If it wasn't there and the diaphragm developed a leak gasoline would flow into the crankcase undetected on an engine mounted pump.


On a Bravo or inboard with the raw water drive-mounted pump you have virtually the same situation except the gasoline cannot get into the crankcase. It just fills up the drive oil reservoir with gasoline and eventually pumps gasoline up the hose to the carb.

This is what mine did. The hose doesn't seem to prevent fuel from getting into the engine or pump drive oil reservoir, it just alerts you that it's happening (assuming you check the hose regularly for evidence of fuel)

Thanks for the impeller off by the way, I will probably take you up on that. I am waiting for this weekend so I can finally dig into the outdrive a little and see what problems I have back there.
