MerCruiser MCM 4.3LX back fires after a while

Hello people. This winter we bought a Sea Ray Seville 180 with a MerCruiser MCM 4.3LX in it.

The engine starts almost immediately and runs nicely. However, after boating for a while the engine starts to hold back, first at full throttle but later also at half throttle, when you then accelerate it starts to backfire. I have a video of this:

I don't know if this is time or temperature dependent.

We initially thought there was a lack of fuel so we checked the following things:
- All ignition parts are properly tightened
- Replace the distribution cover
- Tank venting
- Replace the fuel filter
- Cleaned the carb: Here I discovered that the second pair of gas valves are stuck. I freed them up so that they function again. I thought this might be the problem, but it doesn't matter.

I'm going to check the following things:
- Check whether the fuel pump continues to run. You can hear this running when starting, but I have not yet checked whether it continues to run when the engine is running.
- Check all spark plugs to see if any have a different color.
- Manually switch on the fuel pump and check for fuel leaks.

Are there any other things we can look at?
The next thing would be to replace the carb, but these are quite expensive so I prefer to do this last.

Thank you in advance!
Kind regards,
Sander

Welcome
What is the motors serial number?
The number can be found above the starter.

Have you checked timing?

Thanks for your comment.

The serial number: 0F777896

Haven't checked the timing yet, I'll put that on the list. I'll have to get a timing light from somewhere.

Thanks
I'm finding your motor has TB4 ignition so timing should be 8* BTDC with idle set 650 to 700 RPM

Plugs AC-MR43T / Champion RV15YC4 / NGK BR6FS Gap .040 (1mm)
Thermostat 140*F (62*C)

Go by the cover with gap at .035 manual 18 list .040 but always go with the motor info

Whell, it has been some time and we fixt the problem!

  • Checked timing: This was a little bit off and it goes faster now it is set correctly. Bud still had the problem.
  • Replaced all the sparkplugs were looking oke bud still replaced them. No difference in the problem.
  • Tried different octane fuel, no difference (only for our wallet XD)
  • Replaced sparkplug wires.
  • Replaced the Ignition coil, thit was the problem! When pulling the spark cable the pin inside the coil came with it and was totally rusted and there was water inside.
We now have about 15 hours of nice weather boating and fun with a tube.

Bud the last time the engine coupler broke so we have the replaced that and find out why it broke.

Thank you guys for thinking with us to the solution!
