I have 2 Mercruiser lower units (I am guessing) and I would like to know if anybody can tell me if they are interchangable or not. The numbers I got off them are:

1623-8266

1623-5412

I have searched the internet everywhere to find something on either one of those. Hope you guys are more resourceful than I am! Thanks a million for any help/advise you might be able to give.

Unfortunately I do not have any way to get you any pics. The kids sent the wifes camera on a toilet adventure.

Re: Mercruiser Lower Unit ??????

Here are a couple pics of the two lower units I have. everything is identical except the back of the unit where one is tapered off and the other is squared off. The vertical drive shafts are both the same with the o-ring groove and the push pin. The upper unit I have is squared off at the back and matches up with the lower in the picture but the seals are bad in it and I would like to use the other one that is tapered off. Please help if you can!

Re: Mercruiser Lower Unit ??????

1623-8266s will not superexceed to anything. Mercury Part Number: 1623-5356A4 is the real part number and I know this from experience of replacing cases. that lower gear case fits MerCruiser 1 thru R pre alpha units 120/140, 470/485, 160, 165, 888, 225-s, 233, 896/226/260, 250, r , is all the units that hosing applies too. the gear ratio is diffrent though between these units but use the same casing. the sierra part number is 18-2402. the FOWARD GEAR BEARING BORE SIZE is 3.4985-3.50 IN I.D. on this cassing.

go to this site to see the aplication guide. Marine Parts House calls this lower gear case housing a 17000There you can also see the serial no application.
