What is the word on the Mercruiser inline 4 and 6 cylinder engines? I see a couple of boats that interest me locally. One has an inline 6 - a 22ft Starcraft Islander and the other has a 135HP 4 cylinder in an 18 ft Starcraft.
Did I see something on here suggesting it is becoming more difficult to get parts for the inline 6? How about the older 4 cylinders? Both of these are advertised as being 1978 models.

I really like the older aluminum Starcrafts but I do not want to get into something that is going to be a problem. I already an OMC sterndrive so I am looking to move toward something that still has readily available parts and service if need be. I do not want to spend a fortune however as I do not use it enough to justify big money.

I think both are good engines with known issues, but none are anything to walk away from a purchase on. Parts are not difficult to find, only difficult to find quickly. This can be a big deal depending on circumstances.

I had the six in an 18' boat and loved it.
