74 Gibson houseboat 255hp

Just bought this 77 Gibson houseboat with a 255hp motor. drove couple miles and then trans popped out of gear (or something) but we were unable to get forward or reverse. Boat had trans rebuilt last year and been out recently. I am a mechanic but I don't know anything about how this transmission shifts except it is apparently electronic possibly electric/hydraulic. We are hoping that we have an electrical problem. Can anyone give me any info on this type of boats transmission or shifting mechanism, just don't know where to start. Thanks!

What brand of the motor?
This is forum for Force/Chrysler OB. From my experience Force and Chrysler did not made any 255Hp OB engines.

Wrong forum?

Your best bet is find someone near you to get onboard and investigate.

It could be??? something in the trans, the prop came loose, the coupler stripped, the reverse unit bad, low oil etc.
Like Nordin suggested find the right forum.
The boat sounds like an inboard with a straight drive??

Your right guys, I wasn't even sure what forum I should be in. I think it is an inboard straight drive, I mean the trans and the out drive or propeller unit (not sure what that's even called) is in a straight line (level) with motor. I thought about a sheer pin on the prop but just wasn't sure. Could you guys suggest the right forum for me? Thanks so much for your help.

Send some pics of the entire boat, motor and trans. Send pics of any tags that might have ref info as Brand, Model, Etc.

Good Luck!!!

Mercruiser TR won't shift FWD or RVS

Hey guys, got a 77 Gibson houseboat with a 255 hp GM ANF Mercruiser TR sterndrive, electric shift. The electric shift motor is turning when I put it in gear but it will not go fwd or reverse. With the motor running I can and shifter in gear, I can turn the prop fairly easily (with a stick). Any help? I am an auto mechanic but very new to marine mechanics. Thanks!

The following topic is where we learned what model stern drive I have, Mercruiser 255 newbie Please if needed, have a second look as there's some other diagnostics info mentioned to the electronic shift system near the bottom of the thread...Thanks.

I have a 77 model 255hp GM engine with a MerCruiser II TR Model A transmission according to the manual I found on the site, The pics are exactly the same. I have a few questions, but first the problem: Bought the boat, supposed to have been running fine two weeks prior, took it out for about 45 minutes, ran great, the suddenly it jumped out of gear and we could not get it to shift into forward or reverse after that.
Question 1: The power trim did not work from the controls but I can jump the solenoid and it works, I've noticed there is a hose from the trim pump to the top of the shifter mechanism (the shift motor is working), could this hose have an effect on my shifting if the pump doesn't come on by itself?
Question 2: Is there some type of sheer pin or rubber coupling connecting the prop to the output shaft that could possibly be broken?
Question 3: I understand there is an oil pump in the trans supplying pressure for the forward piston to engage the forward clutch pack and a band for reverse but I'm still trying to understand what exactly happens when the shift fork turns, what has to happen for the trans to shift?
Sorry, I tried to upload pics but they will not upload for some reason.

Curious if I am doing something wrong here, because I haven;t gotten replies on my last two post concerning this problem. I've read the forum rules and have tried to follow them. I've checked all the topics on this forum and read numerous posts but can't find anything similar. Is this just too old of a boat or too hard of a question or am I breaking some forum code of conduct???

Hi Finnegan70, No it's nothing you've done as to why the low response to this type of question.. One of the main issues is that the detailed internal workings of the TR/TRS style drives isn't as well known by most forum members and if you didn't work exclusively around this design drive and/or own one (or more) nor didn't perform your own heavy service work to it, it's sort of hard to try and give detailed information about the internal workings of it especially over a forum mainly due to their complexity over the standard designed stern drives out on the market such as the Alpha and Bravo stern drives from Mercruiser.
Mercruiser had other high performance drives as well but they're typically not brought up that often nor talked about too much on boating sites such as this one. iboats tends to be more centered around typical recreational type boats for local lake type boating vs performance type boats or heavy work load type boats that tend to require more of the use of the TR style stern drive.

iboats used to have a member or two that could help give some good advice about the TR drive but I haven't noticed them posting in quite some time now. TR drives do tend to come up from time to time on another boating forum called Offshoreonly and there are a few members that known some general basics of how it works enough to talk about it some as the members either were or still are owners of the TR design drive... But even still the topics do tend to go quiet kind of quickly sort of like what is happening here.
Wish this old Merc master tech still posted as he was a good knowledgeable guy with the older stuff like what you have as an example, http://www.offshoreonly.com/forums/g...tml#post375744

I can say for sure that this design stern drive would not use a shear pin where the prop contacts the props shaft. The prop hub would be of a solid hub design and even solid hubs will eventually slip to where the hub inside the propeller would need to be inspected and changed out by a propeller repair shop set up for this kind of difficult work.

Here's going to be a parts catalog for the TR stern drive of your year and size for you to look through as to see how the parts would work together.... http://www.mercruiserparts.com/255-t...6-thru-4203749

The next step would be to find a service manual for both your engine and stern drive and start studying it the best you can for a better understanding... The trouble shooting section would be the first place to look at within an OEM service manual.

I'm also going to go-ahead and merge your other topic here with this one as maybe it will help gain some other type interests or traction for you.

Hope your problem isn't to severe and please keep us updated as you tend to find out more of what seems to be happing as while we might not be able help as much as we would like to, we still like to read how it's all going on your end.... Good luck to you with it.

Thanks so much, Fun Times. I've got a manual and have been studying. I guess the next step is to remove and inspect the prop. I'll keep you updated.
