Mercruiser ignition problems

Hi, I have a 1984 Sea Ray with twin Mercruiser 350 v8 I/Os with Thunderbolt 4 ignitions. One engine runs great... sometimes for hours... but will suddenly shut down with misfires. On restarting, it sounds like running on 4 - 5 cylindars and the tac gauge jumps all around wildly... even though it's only chugging along at 900 - 1000 rpm. Restarting after several times/hours... it's back to normal operation again!

Can the ignition control module (Riser mounted) perform sporatically and cause this? Can the ignition sensor? Cap/rotor about 50 hours old. What does the wild tac readings indicate?

Any help would be much appreciated... especially before I spend tons of $$$ on things I don't need, LOL!

Been fishin' a LONG, LONG time... but new to Mercruisers!

Re: Mercruiser ignition problems

Sounds like the coil. The tach is wired to it.. Switch the coil with the other engine to see if it happens.

Re: Mercruiser ignition problems

Sea Flower- Thanks for the info. I changed the coils and it still had problems. I was able to install another module and pick-up sensor which a friend had as a spare and all is now well. Not sure which item was causing the problem but one happy camper here now! :D
