Hi Guys:
I have a mercruiser 4cyl. There are two ribbed hoses that hook from the outdrive to the transon mounting plate. The bottom hose burned completely thru. I don't know why. Does anyone know what this hose is for? Is it an exhaust hose? And is that why the motor got hot? Like I said it is the bottom hose the top hose is fine but I will replace both to be safe. Are there any other areas I should check? Or does this just happen when that hose fails?
Thanks
P.S Been reading other posts this is a Great Forum (YOU GUYS ROCK)for all the information and time you give to your fellow boaters.

Empty,

The part you ae describing is the exhaust bellows. It would not make your engine hot but a hot engine (exhaust) could burn it through.

You have some cooling issues that need to be addressed.

Djohn has a thought, if you burned up your exahaust bellows, you probably have a cooling problem an are ****ed lucky you did't burn up your engine........

Re: Mercruiser I/O Very Hot

I assume that you are referring to the Exhaust Elbow Bellows, because only early V8 Mercruiser Alpha One models used a lower exhaust bellows in the gimbal housing. Later models use a water tube to avoid failure from chafing, but you did not indicate year or outdrive type.

In any case, it is not being properly cooled, no doubt from a failed water pump impeller in the lower unit. If you'd like to provide more info I'm sure myself or others could isolate your problem a little more.

Good luck changing the bellows, I just did it yesterday and that was a 1 afternoon CUSSING in every language job....
I bet there are many Mercruiser engineers that didn't sleep well last night after my words.
My wife took all children inside and away.
One suggestion, I had a very very long needlenose plyer, it did come very handy to install drive end, grabbing rubber boot over fitting.
