I am helping my buddy get his boat ready for summer and lake we recently both bought our first boats ,anyway my problem is this we have a nineteen seventy one sea rae w a ford three fifty one motor .we cannot get the drive shaft (prop ) to spin freely or indicate by yurning the prop that it is in neutral it seems to be stuck in gear,. The last yhing we did ti it was take the lower unit off and check the impellor being done w that we put yhe lower unit back on and now when the lever is put into the neutral position shoukdnt we ve able to yurn the prop by hand to see if its in nuefral or not and the prop shoukd bee spinning freeky in both directions correct? Is there any process or sequence we can go through and check and fix any problems as far as lower unit and or cable adjustment process .anyone knows of pkease help asap we are gdying to go out rhis weekend if we coukd get a response asap it woukd be very much appreciated thank u

It?s possible you didn?t get the intermediate shift shaft properly indexed to the lower shift shaft.
The correct process is covered in the MerCruiser Service Manual

The manual can be found in the adults only thread. You need to lock the lower in forward and have the shift shoe facing forward when putting the halves together. Don't forget the washer on the lower.
