I am looking at a used gimbal housing for my 1972 120 merc I/O on ebay, and I am trying to figure out how I would tell if it will fit my application. The seller doesn't know what year or model series it is. Is there an easy way to sort that out?

Check the serial # on your gimble housing if it falls between 2791957 THRU 4893634 so should the one you looking to buy.

Where is the serial number on the gimbal housing? I can find it on the drive unit just fine, but I can't find it on the gimbal housing itself...

While I can't answer your Question,...........

I Can tell you that Any Mercruiser transom assembley Up to 1982 Should fit Just Fine,.........
There Maybe some Up-dates,... But it's Usually a Pretty Easy Up-grade Fitment.........

Even going to an Alpha transom assembley is Reasonably Easy,...........
But you'd have Other fitment Issues doing That........
