Re: Mercruiser drive unit
Bobscar & Trent...I'm curious about something.

If the outdrive will trim up...then wouldn't it be safe to "assume" (yeah, I know what happens when one assumes!) that the trim (pump) motor is good...at least working? In looking at my 1980 898...it appears the pump motor operates whenever the solenoid is energized (I'm talking about the solenoid mounted on the pump assembly). So if it's possible to raise the outdrive, but unable to lower it...could we not rule out the pump motor and look for another problem within the "down" circuits? My 1980 factory manual lists the following for troubleshooting "pump motor runs only in "UP" direction:

Defective push button(s)

High resistance, broken or loose connection(s) in "DOWN" circuit

Defective field winding ("DOWN" circuit)

Trent...does his 228 have the "double solenoid system"? One solenoid for "UP" and another for "DOWN"? If so, that's different from my 898...it has a single solenoid. But in either case, if one function of the trim works (Up or Down)...doesn't that suggest the pump motor is working?

What Bob describes sure sounds like a faulty "DOWN" solenoid...it may be energizing but has poor contacts. By the way, I'm now "assuming" he has the double solenoid system!

So Bob...have you done as Trent suggested, and "jumped" the two large terminals on the "DOWN" solenoid? According to my factory schematic...it should be the solenoid with the green trigger wire. The "UP" solenoid should have a blue trigger wire.

This is good stuff...keep us up to date with your progress.

Walt
