Today I changed the guages. The engine doesn't run anymore. I tested the spark from the iginition and it was nothing, which means something wrong before the coil. Any Ideas? Thanks

I didn't brake any circuits at all. I'm testing everything from the coil to the ignition switch. I found that the batteries switch is not working when you switch it to with Battery 2. but still it's not the problem since battery 1 switch works fine.

with ign switch on, check to see if you have 12v to positive side of coil, if so the ign switch circuit is good. if you have power to coil unplug shift interrupt switch and check in coil fires. then check iftach reads when you crank over engine. if it does dist is working ok. if not problem is in dist. make sure al wiring to dist is connected and in good shape, does it have points or module? if all these check out could be one or the other or a bad ignition coil. one last thing before you go to far, make sure the rotor in the dist spins when you crank the engine over.

We are working on a 1996 Sea Pro 21' cuddy cabin boat. it has I/O 3.0 Mercruiser 140. I check the power to the power to the coil and there is no power. I went back to the batteries switch and illiminated it by connecting the positive side of the battery to the starter straight up. The tac reads the engine speed while cranking. VOLT guage shows 12V without any apparent problems. The starter and the engine cranks strong but it doesn't fire. Carburator and accelerator pump works fine.

Is the kill switch lanyard on?

You weren't planning on getting on plane with this boat were you? I doubt that 3.0L engine will push a 21' boat that fast.

Re: Mercruiser doesn't run. Coil doesn't spark

Thanks a lot for your fast response. I really appreciate it. Where is the kill switch lanyard located? I just disconnected the new tac ign wire and it fired right up. I assume the NEW tac is bad unless there is some kind of short. What do you think? Also, since this is the first time the engine runs after the new guages were installed, I realized the Temp guage is not working as well. Do you know how can I test the temp thermostat?

The engine ran fine for 2 hours and sounded good at Idle speed. However when I open the throttle, I hear popping coming from the carb. Not sure what could be the problem. Any ideas?

Ayuh,... Ya may not have 1, not all boats do...

If it hooked up right, ya, I'd say it's probably Bad, right outa the box...

Ground the wire, at the sender, the gauge should Peg, hot...

She's goin' Lean,...
Fuel filters, carb, whatever....

Bond, I just pulled the spark plugs and they were black. plugs are 1 month old. I know that lean fuel shows on the plugs, I just don't know what color.

White in color on plugs means a lean condition.
Black means carbon fouled (Rich).
Tan in color means running good.

There are many ways to check plugs and you almost need an expert to read them to tell ya whats wrong!
Use the above info to give ya an idea where to start looking.

I think you still have an electrical issue !
