Hi Guys.Last season a few dealers in Ireland got hold of the new Mercruiser Diesels to try out on the smaller runabouts.I think they were 1700cc turbo cummins engines. The feed back wasn,t very good.I was wondering if you guys have come across any of these engines and what your thoughts are

Haven"t heard of a 1700 cc diesel.Searay used a 3L 150 hp in some 1994 23 ft sundancers.I don't think they went over too well,hp too low and it was expensive.resale value is on average 1000$ more. From personal experience (not marine)benefits of diesel are durability and fuel economy, high-low end torque.Down side is they they have to big to give decent hp. Cost to repair and parts availability. I'd stay away if I were you, unless a whole lot people buy them so parts become available.Merc has a new 4.3L diesel out,300hp! you can check it out on there web site.

Jim

Some company in MN was mating up Yanmar diesels with mercruiser outdrives, and from what I heard it worked well. The new diesels can spin up to the higher RPS, are lighter and dependable. Something must have gone wrong cuz I haven't seen or heard of them for a couple of years..

AM General (Humvee fame) is currently marinizing a 6.5L.
You can also look at www.MarineDieselUsa.com
for a supercharged 6.5L

From the press packages they may be identical engines private labeled with some differences (for instance, AM-G is turbocharging theirs, rather than supercharging).

I think the 1.7 turbodiesel is pretty new. Check out stingrays website about it. They are putting it on there 20ms center console fishing boat. There are alot of write ups on this combo there. I think the motor is made by Isusu and marinized by mercruiser.

There have been a number of manufacturers here in NZ that are offering that 1.7 diesel.
A couple of writeups have been quite favourable about it.

Peter

As Cuzner mentioned above, diesels were heavy… were … new technology has dramatically reduced the weight and increased the performance. I’m sold on them for marine use. You don’t have any of the safety concerns that gasoline does.. No regs for fuel tanks or fuel line. Don’t have to worry about everything being ‘ignition protected’. No engine electronics…no sparks plugs… On the other hand, you can’t leave a ½ tank of diesel fuel in your boat. The fuels requires maintaining…something you don’t/can’t do with gasoline.
