Mercruiser Controls Reverse Shifting Problem
I have a 79 Searay 26' The shifter controls work backwards. You push them forward and it is in reverse , you push it down and it is in forward . They are Merc controls, double levers. Is their any way to reverse them? I have enough length of cable to pull them up to pull the sides off. Any ideas of what I can do ? How do i take the cables out of the box without taking it all apart?

I am not positive but think I've seen different attach points in the remote shifter if the drive is standard or counter rotation. Probably depends on the shifter.

Don't know if they used different shifters in '79, maybe post a pic of it for the mercruiser wizards on here.

Ayuh,... Ya gotta go Deeper than that,....
Open the controller,+ you'll see the optional cable attachment for the Shifting cable...
Looks like the sideplate, shift cable side needs to come off....

Sorry I havn't gotten back to you but we had a heat wave hit us so in a couple days it's suppose to end . Before i posted i pulled the left side off and had one hell of a time getting it back together again , so i am leery of going any farther.
BUT i am going to.So if i can just get the case off, so i can see inside I am going to disconnect the four cables and turn it around and connect it back up again and see what happens .

Any comment would be appreciated to make this easier .

guessing a twin installation.
Did you install the cables?
Was it like this when you bought the boat?
Does port control work the stbd system?
You most likely can just reverse the control box assembly with the cables attached,.

Yes ,this is a twin engine,and it was this way when i got it .It is not reversed,
port engine ,port control,so that is why i am going to disconnect it and turn
the control box around,Now they are hooked to the levers in front , when i turn
it around the levers will be in the back .So i hope it works.

Well i tore the shifter apart and turned it around,put the port side together and it shifted like it was ok so i put the star board side together and got it ok ,then went back and started checking the port side and it wasn't ok .The forward was between neutral and reverse.Have tried switching plates and everything,tore it apart at least 50 times and still can't figure it out.Guess i will try again tomorrow.
Does anyone know what i am doing wrong?

Well i guess it was all my fault because i reversed two cables when i turned the shifter around . Don't know why it took so long to figure out but it's ok now.

Glad to hear you got it figured out. Sounded grim for a while. Time to get out and use it while there is still time left.
