I am helping my dad with his boat - he has a 1986 19' Sportcraft with a 3 liter Mercruiser and Alpha One. The Shifter control box is in need of replacement. (It is very loose and sloppy - basically worn out). Does anyone know if you can use any of the aftermarket brands available? (This is the kind that is side mounted with the trim and tilt button on the side of the handle). He was told the his particular control box has the cables inside it as opposed to outside it if that helps.

Re: Mercruiser Control Box

Hello, West Marine sells a unit made by Morse that is adaptable to the Merc style cables and pretty much fits what you have perfectly. It's called an SL-3 series control. With the tilt and trim buttons installed in the handle it retails for $290.00. If your not looking to spend that much try E Bay. Lots of side style controls like that there. That's where I picked up the one I have for about $50.00. Hope this helps!

Re: Mercruiser Control Box

Upon further investigation we discovered he has a Commander 3000 box - it apparently is a hassle to change things around, (so I'm told), with the generic boxes. We went ahead and bought a new Mercruiser product for not much more money. Everything's supposed to just plug in that way with no splicing, etc involved. Will let you know how it turns out.
