Re: Mercruiser aluminum exhaust manifolds
I have a 2006 Formula with 496 Magnum Mercruiser engine I purchased new. Last fall my mechanic informed me that I had aluminum exhaust manifolds which, if left untended, would destroy the motor. It has come to my attention that Mercruiser was aware of the inherent flaws in using aluminum but did not issue a recall. So I am facing a $3-4000 repair before spring launch or risk replacing the entire engine.
Has anyone dealt with Mercury on this issue? Any results? Any advice?
Thanks
Mercruiser still sells the aluminum manifolds, but they are for fresh water use. I would think that you could get a new set of manifolds for a lot less than $3-$4K. More like under $2K installed. So, maybe take that up with the mechanic, or shop around.
In addition to Mercruiser, you could contact Formula to see what their take is on the use of aluminum manifolds as it pertaints to your boat (be sure to give them the HIN # when you contact them).
Manifolds (any type) should be inspected internally about every 5 years, so perhaps your mechanic did the internal inspection? If not, then an inspection could determine if you have an issue or not. If you get to 10 years with them, then probably time to replace regardless.
