Have a mercruiser alpha one that has been pressure tested over the past year by two different marine mechanics and can find no leaks. Have replaced lower plug. Uses about 1 ounce of fluid in one hour of driving. This is the counter rotation drive. Other drive uses none. Puzzled.

This is a recurring problem. I have put almost a quart in driving the boat for 12-15 hours. There is no sign of oil in bilge or in water outside of boat.

Try checking to see if you are leaking oil into your bellows. If you have gear oil in the bellows, your yoke seal is leaking. The yoke may also be worn.

Is this a continuing problem?Or will this stop after the gear oil in your resivoir has had a chance to top off your gearcase.Remember that that resivoir gravity feeds thick gear oil to a gearcase that has been filled to only the top fill plug on your drive ,leaving an air bubble for that resivoir to fill. It is not uncommon for that resivoir level to drop substantially after a gear oil change or in a new unit.If you continue to need to add oil after ,say ,10 hours, then I would get really concerned.
