Can someone please help.
We are trying to take out the alpha one gen II out drive to replace gimble bearing. I saw some instructions on putting the drive to forward so I can remove the out drive easily.
Well, I didn't know about that until I remove the cables and all the bolts to remove the out drive.
I can't pull the out drive out, it seems stuck since there is water in the u joint bellows and some rust. I try to yank it out base on what people suggested in other posts but no luck.

Is it because I didn't put the drive to forward before removing the drive cable? Is it a must that I need to put the drive to forward to line it up for Alpha one Gen II out drive.

Thank you so much for your help!

Re: mercruiser alpha i gen II out drive

Base on what some info I saw, I thought I need to unhook the drive cable so that i can pull the drive out to change the gimble bearing.

Do I need to put the cable back and put the drive to forward? Is that necessary to remove the outdrive. I just want to make sure the drive shaft is not stuck because I did not put the drive to forward.

Thanks

Ayuh,... Once in Forward, the cable don't move when pullin' the drive...

The factory Manuals are in the Adluts Only section at the top of this forum,...

Thanks for the manual info.
I am still not sure I understand your answer on my question. Is it necessary to put the drive to forward to remove the out drive?

First of all I agree you should download the manual, read it, and understand it. As for the shift cable being disconnected. It's OK. Just reach under the drive and manually turn the upside down, metal L shaped shift dog until it is facing straight ahead. However it doesn't sound like that is your problem. Your drive shaft o rings may just be catching on the gimbal bearing. Just take a large screw driver and gently pry between the bell housing and the drive there should be notches built in. If there is water in the bellows replace them!!!

DO NOT PRY WITH ANYTHING unless you want to replace expensive parts. There are no pry holes anywhere.

Drive MUST be in FORWARD GEAR to remove and reinstall. Period. Push in on the short shift cable while someone turns the prop clockwise until it is in gear.

DO NOT do this, it will cost you a small fortune.

Re: mercruiser alpha i gen II out drive

I've read that you can 'drop' the out drive to help loosen it. Mind you when I say 'drop' I mean maybe 1/4-1/2 and inch at at time. More like a bump. You need to make sure you have enough room under the skeg so it does not hit the ground!

Disconnect trim/tilt cylinders from aft side and tie them up out of the way. Loosen but don't remove the 6 nuts. Have several millimeters between the nuts and the housing. Check clearance of skeg to ground (DON'T CHANCE BREAKING IT!! The skeg CANNOT strike the floor/ground for this process). Slightly raise drive and let it drop (remember 1/4/-1/2 of an INCH ONLY). The small 'bumping' may help to free it up. Let gravity do some work. Once it starts moving, remove the nuts all the way and then you can pull and push and strain to you heart's content. Have a buddy around in case that thing gets away from you. Don't want to drop it once it does get loose!

This will ONLY work for SOME situations. It will not work for shafts that are truly 'frozen' inside. If it has rusted bad, then you will need to check out the other posts on this forum on breaking one of those free. I believe there is a torch involved!

My repair manual tells you to release stuck drives this way:
(Yes, I believe in reading the manual first. Have had a bad experience from not reading one!)

Disconnect the engine mounts and move the engine slightly forward so you can pry the shaft out from the inside.

Remove the top cover plate of the outdrive and use a punch and hammer to loosen the nut holding the u-joint shaft. The drive can then be removed leaving the shaft in place.

Next best thing is take it to a professional. Remember you are messing with a drive unit that's worth $2-4000 and another $1-2000 for the gimble assembly that it mounts to.

Spend some time with the manual. You won't regret it.
