I just replaced the transom shift cables ( alpha 1 gen 1) stiff shift. I very carefully put the new one on. Shift levers move very smooth without the drive installed as soon as it went back on stiff again. Its killing the engine because of the interupt swith. Im going to remove the drive again tomorrow could this be the shift arm either on the bell housing or lower unit? The bell housing shift arm seemed to be very easy. Im lost and real tired. lol please help. also having a hard time getting the cable adjusted its close, just having more problems getting it in reverse. I know im suppose to move the pin to get reverse but im going to have to drill a new one I think. Hope someone has an idea thanks in advance.

make sure you are in the proper gear. Drive needs to be pulled and replaced in Forward gear. You also need to make sure it is and stays in forward by a little CCW pressure on the prop. If your shift foot moved you will have problems.
Did you use the old or new style cable kit? If you used the old style you need to be precise on the cable measurement.
Don't drill anything. Not needed. If you continue to have problems take it to a shop before it get damaged.

I made sure it was in gear i've pulled drives many times. I used the new style precut quicksilver cable. the instructions tell me to place the drive in gear and adjust the barrel to forward then adjust the pin for reverse but also says you may have to drill a new pin location for reverse. any other ideas. im thinking the shift shaft has corrosion causing the stiff shift

Womack79... Check that the intermediate shift shaft in the bell housing is nice and free. I've seen many with a tight top bushing....

ok the removal of the drive no problem, the alignment no problem, reinstall drive, no problem. Here's the problem the stud on nut "B" from the mercstuff diagram, is all the way out and needs to be farther out. theses are brand new cables and when I say cables im refering to both drives. They are being installed on a twin. Im going to remove the drive again tonight and check the intermediate shift shaft. problem Im not sure of is this its hard to get reverse on both drives, and the starboard is next to impossible to get in a gear without triping the shift interupt switch its too tight. I pulled the cables last night they were not kinked or anything just tight.
