I just replaced the impeller on my alpha 1 gen 1 sterndrive off a '90 wellcraft and the driveshaft oil seal is destroyed. it is the seal, seirra #18-2056, that the lower driveshaft goes through to mate into the upper gear case. i have never worked on an outdrive before but am mechanically inclined and replaced the impeller with no problems just curious what i am getting into to replace this seal, as i am 99% sure that the upper housing has to be taken completely apart to reach this seal. any pictures info advice on to make this easier would be a great help. can this be done without dismantling the gear sets inside the upper housing? i don't want to throw a crap load of $ at a mechanic if it is something that i can do myself.

THank you very much for the PDF doc. 100 times better than the manual i payed 40 bucks for.

if this is saying that the seal is pressed through the bottom towards the lower gear housing couldn't i pry it out through the bottom and press in a new one without taking the upper case apart?

The lower seal can be removed from the bottom and the new one installed from the bottom.

Were you able to get this done? I know it's been almost a year but I am fighting an oil leak after re-assembly of lower unit when I changed Impeller. It is coming from where upper and lower unit meet. I had out drive lowered for testing and no problems. When put out drive in tilt position to move the boat it started to leak.

Welcome to iboats frank, best to start a new thread of your own. (per forum rules and announcement at the top of this forum)
Post your engine and drive information and we can help you find your leak. It may not be what this poster had wrong.

I need to replace this seal on my 1985 Mercruiser, Alpha One, Gen One. it looks like I can pull it out from the bottom and replace it from the bottom. Do you remember the part number of the seal kit you used to do this.
I know this is a long shot, that being so long ago, but I wanted to give it try.
