Mercruiser A1 G1 140HP Upper Gear housing Question regarding heat..

[1985 Century Mustang]

Question: Is the top half of the Sterndrive (upper gear housing cap that has the 4 bolts) suppose to be hot? I just flushed out my engine for 10 minutes w the ears and noticed it was hot when I touched that cap. I checked the gear oil under that cap and it was good. I'm not sure if this is normal as I never touched it prior before today.

Depends on what "hot" means
HOt to touch but not burning your skin, I wouldn't worry about it. The exhaust runs thru the drive and your on a hose

It doesn't burn my skin but it's pretty hot.
