hey everybody, i'm new to this site but found that it seems to be very resourceful.

Last year when i was 19 i bought a boat from a guy i worked with, told me everything was fine on it even ran it for me, so i bought it for 1000 cash, took it home checked the oil....milky....my heart sank...so in desperate hope, i changed the oil...ran it again....milky....looked carefully and the soft plugs were pushed on the 302 in it......that was the end of my summer

This summer i started on the boat again..the floors were completely deteriorated and rot away...so i took up all the old fiberglass and plywood put new treated 2x6 studs and put in 1/2 in treated plywood for the floor, painted the floor and fiberglassed the cracks and joints....

Took out the engine, and rebuilt it hoping the engine and heads were not cracked...put teh engine back on the boat..ran it without manifolds..hoping to find them as being the problem.....and it ran cool just fine....now yesterday i bought some new manifolds got them bolted up and everything and as i was timing the engine...it overheated.....and my dad thinks i switched up the hoses on the manifolds....and yea i've put alot of time in on this thing and am getting stressed and drained.....i've read changing your timing can cause an engine to overheat...is this true...if anybody has any advice let me know...thanks!!!

When was the last time the impeller was changed?
You were running water through the drive?

Although it would not been the cause of overheat, you are running that 302 a bit retarded. Factory stats=10 deg BTDC.

Other than that, what mkast said.

uh, well i found out the overheating problem had two hoses switched up so it was just recirculating hot water though the engine and just shooting the fresh water out right away...but yea got it to run about 140 or so....but when i would rev it up a bit and let it go back down i heard some rattling noises from the prop area...any ideas? also there was water shooting out up where the stern drive goes through the boat...any ideas...?

Water is supposed to flow out of the stern drive up by the transom, only a little bit of it does through all the way to the prop. The rattling noises could be the exhaust flappers you were hearing in the exhaust y-tube, it's tough to say really.

I have always scratched my head about hose routing design on an 888 raw water cooled engine (I have one). Here is a diagram someone posted long ago that I have kept.

p.s. i bought the book and was looking it, didn't really help me and it was really strict on the fact you are to keep the reservoir full in the down position and make sure not to overfill.......well i read up on other post and they said that it might be stuck......i got mine to go down but only by disconnecting a hose and lettting it run down....with this eleminate the possibilty of it being stuck?
