I have a 1973 888 sterndrive. I had to take the entire drive system out back in May to rebuild transom. During reinstall everything has went great up to this point. I don't think I installed the transom plate to engine flywheel housing fastners correctly. I have the original Mercruiser shop manual (usually all I need) and it's leaving me scratching my head on this one. We got the engine back in the boat and cannot get rear of motor up high enough for the alignment tool to go through correctly. We have lowered the front of the engine MUCH lower than it originally was. Still no alignment. I did not get a good look at what order the bolt, metal washer, soft "bushing" like washer and the spacer go back on in relation to the fly wheel housing and transom plate. I just set the rear engine mounts right down on the transom plate mounts. Then I put the metal washer on the bolt, followed by spacer, then felt washer followed by spring like lock washer. This cannot be right because the felt washers not doing anything but sitting up on top. I believe this is why the rear of the engine is too low. The parts manual just shows the order in which they go on the bolt. Not what goes between the two brackets. (see attached link for parts breakdown)

On the link above, the fastners in question are #'s 7,8,9,10 & 11
I am also attaching a photo of another transom plate (not 888 but still has same fastners and principal) part#'s 10,11,12,13,and 14.
Found what I was looking for. http://www.boatfix.com/merc/Install/gas/86419602.pdf pages 34 & 39.
Thanks anyways.
Thanks so much for any help.
